Import/Export Code
What is an import/export code?
An import/export code – also known as a customs code or SARS exporter/importer registration number – is a unique number issued by SARS that allows your business to legally import goods into or export goods out of South Africa.
You must have this code before you can clear goods through customs. It’s a legal requirement under South African customs law and is essential if your business deals with cross-border trade, even occasionally.
Who needs an import/export code in South Africa?
Any individual, company, or trust that imports or exports goods valued at more than R50,000 per shipment must apply for an import/export code. This applies to:
- Retailers bringing in goods from overseas
- Manufacturers exporting products
- E-commerce sellers importing stock
- Businesses involved in international trade agreements
If you’re only receiving small parcels or personal goods below the threshold, the courier company may use its own code to clear the shipment. But for ongoing or business-related imports/exports, having your own code is essential.
How do I apply for an import/export code?
You can apply for an import/export code by:
- Registering on SARS eFiling
- Completing the RAV01 form (for client information updates)
- Submitting required documents, such as your company registration certificate, proof of address, and tax clearance
- Waiting for SARS approval (usually 5–10 working days, but it can vary)
Alternatively, you can apply through a registered service provider like Govchain, which handles the full process for you and avoids the paperwork hassles.
Once issued, the code is permanent and can be used for both importing and exporting. There’s no need to reapply unless your business details change.
Is an import/export code the same as an EORI or CCN number?
No – South Africa does not use EORI numbers (which are used in the EU). However, your import/export code serves a similar function within South Africa’s customs system.
A CCN (Customs Client Number) is another term sometimes used locally to refer to the same SARS registration number. So while the names may vary (import/export code, customs code, CCN), they generally refer to the same thing in the South African context.
