Import & Export Licence
An import/export licence is a customs code SARS issues to companies that bring goods into or send goods out of South Africa. Clearing agents can’t release your shipment without it. Govchain registers your company with SARS Customs and emails you the code, usually within 20 working days.
Cost:R2 700
Timeframe: 20 days
For:Companies importing or exporting goods from South Africa
Who needs an import/export licence
Any South African company that imports or exports goods must register with SARS Customs and receive a customs code. Clearing agents and freight forwarders can’t release your goods without it.
- Retailers bringing stock in from overseas suppliers
- Manufacturers sourcing raw materials abroad
- Exporters shipping goods to customers in other countries
- E-commerce businesses selling across borders
You need a separate code for importing and for exporting. Tell us which one you need (or both) when you apply. This page is for company registrations. Individuals importing personal goods don’t need this.

Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to the most common questions about Import & Export Licence
Do I need a customs code to import or export?
Yes. SARS Customs won’t release goods at the border without a valid customs client number linked to your company.
What’s the difference between an importer and exporter code?
They are separate SARS registrations. If you do both, you need both codes. Tell us up-front and we’ll apply for both at the same time.
How long does it take?
About 20 working days from the point we have your documents. SARS processing times vary.
Do I need a SARS Registered Representative?
Yes. SARS requires a Registered Representative on file before accepting the application. If you don’t have one, we offer that service separately.
Does the code expire?
The customs code doesn’t expire, but SARS can suspend it if your company falls behind on tax or customs obligations. Keep your returns up to date.
Can sole proprietors apply?
This service is for registered companies. Sole proprietors can still get a customs code, but the application process is different. Get in touch and we’ll point you to the right path.
