Workplace Skills Plan (WSP)
What is a Workplace Skills Plan (WSP)?
A Workplace Skills Plan (WSP) is a formal document submitted by South African employers that outlines their training and development plans for employees over a 12-month period. It shows how the business intends to upskill its workforce and support national skills development goals.
WSPs are submitted annually to your company’s relevant Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) and are a key part of complying with South Africa’s Skills Development legislation.
What should a WSP include?
A valid WSP must include:
- Details of current employee skills and roles
- Identified training needs or skills gaps
- Planned training initiatives and budgets
- Training aligned to the SETA’s priority skills list
It also often works alongside an Annual Training Report (ATR), which shows the training you actually completed in the previous year. Together, these reports help your business qualify for skills development rebates and SETA grants.
Who needs to submit a WSP?
Businesses that:
- Have a payroll of R500,000 or more per year
- Are registered for Skills Development Levy (SDL)
- Want to claim SETA grants or score B-BBEE skills development points
If you’re not yet registered for SDL or still setting up your company, it’s a good idea to start with the right foundation so you can benefit from these incentives in the future.
