Registered Company Address
Your Registered Company Address is the official physical street address you give to CIPC when registering your company.
This is where important legal documents, compliance letters, or notices from government departments (like CIPC or SARS) will be sent.
It must always be kept up to date.
"What qualifies as a Registered Address?"
The address must:
- Be a real street address in South Africa
- Not be a PO Box
- Be a place where company records are stored or can be accessed if needed
Even if you don’t trade from that address, it must be an actual physical location, not virtual-only or mailbox-only.
"Why does my Registered Address matter?"
It’s used by:
- CIPC to send formal notices (including compliance warnings or deregistration threats)
- SARS to verify your business location for tax purposes
- Banks and funders for FICA and due diligence
- Clients or partners to confirm your business legitimacy
If your address is wrong or outdated, you could miss something important and that could put your company at risk.
"Can I use my home address?"
Yes.
If you're a startup, freelancer, or small business, you can absolutely use your home address, as long as it’s a valid street address in South Africa.
You can always update it later if you move to a commercial space.
"Can I use a co-working space or virtual office?"
Yes, if:
- It has a real, physical street address
- You’re able to receive mail or compliance notices there
Some businesses use shared or serviced offices as their registered address when they’re just getting started.
"Can I use a PO Box?"
No.
You can add a PO Box as a postal address, but CIPC still requires a physical street address for official company records.
"What if my address changes?"
You must notify CIPC by filing a CoR21.1 form.
Not updating your address can lead to…
- Missed deadlines
- Legal trouble
- Deregistration.
Govchain can handle the update for you quickly and correctly.
