ITA34C (Notice of Assessment)
The ITA34C is your official Notice of Assessment from SARS.
It’s issued after you submit your company’s income tax return (usually the ITR14) and tells you the outcome of that return, like…
- Whether you owe money,
- are due a refund,
- or if SARS has flagged anything for review.
This document is one of the most important parts of staying tax compliant as a company in South Africa.
"What information is in an ITA34C?"
Your ITA34C will include:
- The total amount of tax owed or refundable
- Whether your return has been accepted, reviewed, or flagged for verification
- Any penalties or interest due
- Your payment due dates (if you owe tax)
- A summary of the income and deductions submitted
It’s basically SARS saying: “We’ve reviewed your tax return and here’s what we’ve calculated.”
"Why does an ITA34C matter?"
The ITA34C shows whether your company is in good standing with SARS. You’ll need it to:
- Make payments to SARS
- Claim tax refunds (if due)
- Apply for a Tax Clearance Certificate
- Sort out disputes or corrections
- Stay compliant for audits, tenders, or investor checks
Ignoring your ITA34C (especially if it shows tax owed) can lead to penalties, interest, or even SARS freezing your account.
"What if my ITA34C says I owe tax but I already paid?"
This can happen if:
- SARS hasn’t processed your payment yet
- There was a mismatch in the payment reference
- The payment was allocated incorrectly
In that case, you’ll need to provide proof of payment or request a correction through SARS. Our support team can help you do this if you’re unsure how.
"What if I don’t understand my ITA34C?"
You’re not alone — the layout and terminology can be confusing.
Govchain can explain your ITA34C to you, help you make sense of what’s been assessed, and advise on your next steps.
"What if I never received my ITA34C?"
If you filed your return but didn’t receive your ITA34C:
- It may still be processing
- SARS may have flagged your return for review
- The return may not have gone through correctly
You can log into SARS eFiling to check its status, or contact Govchain to help you retrieve or fix it.
"How do I get an ITA34C?"
You’ll receive it after submitting your company’s ITR14 tax return.
If Govchain handles your tax filing, we’ll send your ITA34C straight to your inbox (and explain what it means)
