EMP201

What is an EMP201?

An EMP201 is a monthly declaration form that employers in South Africa must submit to SARS. It’s used to declare and pay PAYE (Pay-As-You-Earn), UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund), and SDL (Skills Development Levy) deducted from employee salaries.

If your company is registered as an employer with SARS, submitting EMP201 forms is a legal requirement — even if you didn’t pay any salaries in a particular month (you’d still submit a “nil” return).

What must be included on an EMP201?

Each EMP201 declaration includes:

  • PAYE withheld from employee salaries
  • UIF contributions (1% from the employee + 1% from the employer)
  • SDL contributions (1% from the employer, if applicable)

The form must be submitted monthly, and payment must be made to SARS by the 7th of the following month. Late submission or payment results in penalties and interest.

How do I register and submit EMP201 forms?

You’ll need to register your business with SARS for PAYE, UIF, and SDL (usually via the EMP101/RAV01 form). Once registered:

  • Log in to SARS eFiling
  • Navigate to the "EMP201" section
  • Submit your monthly declaration and make payment
